Toyota Australia responds to current operating conditions

Toyota Australia today announced it is undertaking a review of its business to manage the unprecedented operating conditions that are placing significant pressure on its operations.

The company will immediately adjust its workforce at its manufacturing plant in Altona, Victoria, with plans to implement about 350 compulsory redundancies.

Toyota Australia President and CEO, Mr Max Yasuda said: “It is unfortunate that we have to take this action and we will ensure affected employees are supported during this process.

“In consideration of current and anticipated market conditions this action is necessary. It is not possible to maintain our workforce at its current size.

“Toyota Australia is facing severe operating conditions resulting in unsustainable financial returns due to factors including the strong Australian currency, reduced cost competitiveness and volume decline, especially in export markets.”

Mr Yasuda said the company’s vehicle manufacturing production levels have reduced from 149,000 in 2007, to 94,000 in 2011, and an expected 95,000 cars in 2012.

“The reality is that our volumes are down. What we assumed was a temporary circumstance has turned into a permanent situation. This drop of 36% in just four years shows the scale of our challenges.”

Mr Yasuda said Toyota Australia would tackle the challenges impacting its business with actions including workforce adjustment; import vehicle sourcing optimisation; efficiency improvements and cost improvements.

These actions were part of the company’s strategy to transform its Australian operations, including strengthening its manufacturing business.

“Manufacturing is a vital element of our overall operations in Australia. The actions we take now to transform our business will pave the way for our future success as a leading manufacturer and marketer of vehicles to local and export customers.”

In 2012, Toyota Australia will launch the next generation Hybrid Camry and Aurion models, alongside the flagship Camry launched in December 2011. It is building a new plant to manufacture four cylinder and hybrid engines at Altona. The company employs 4,683 employees in Australia. During 2011 the company produced about 94,000 vehicles for domestic and export customers.

Toyota HiLux on the podium in Dakar rally

Toyota HiLux on the podium in Dakar rally

Toyota HiLux has completed a dream run in the world's toughest off-road race, achieving a podium finish in the 2012 Dakar rally.

Toyota HiLux has completed a dream run in the world's toughest off-road race, achieving a podium finish in the 2012 Dakar rally.

The double-cab petrol HiLux clinched third spot in the gruelling endurance event after two weeks of competition in the wilds of Argentina, Chile and Peru.

Dakar is the ultimate endurance test with this year's rally covering 8,300km, including 4,200km of special competitive stages through some of the toughest terrain in the world.

The Toyota Motorsport HiLux was prepared by the Imperial Toyota team and piloted by South African Giniel De Villiers and German co-driver Dirk von Zitzewitz.

Toyota HiLux also finished in outright sixth and 11th place.

In the T2 production class, Toyota dominated with seven of the top eight finishers, including class victory for Spaniard Javier Foj in a Toyota LandCruiser.

Toyota Australia executive director sales and marketing Matthew Callachor said the result confirmed the reputation of Toyota and HiLux for rugged, dependable vehicles that thrived in the toughest conditions.

"Just to finish the Dakar is an achievement, so to have three HiLuxes in the top 11 placings is remarkable in an event renowned for breaking vehicles," Mr Callachor said.

"Success at Dakar demonstrates why Toyota HiLux has a well-deserved reputation for being 'unbreakable'," he said.

Competing in the 33rd Dakar were 465 drivers and riders with 171 cars, 185 motorcycles, 76 trucks and 33 quads.

The world's longest and toughest motor race consists of 14 special stages cover 4,200km of rugged terrain that includes river crossings, narrow mountain tracks, spectacular canyons, dry river beds and sand dunes.

It includes a high-altitude crossing of the Andes from Argentina into Chile at 4,700 metres above sea level and temperatures as high as 45 degrees Centigrade in the dry and arid Atacama Desert in Chile.

The competition stages are linked by 4,100km on normal roads.

Prius c best fuel economy in the city

Prius c best fuel economy in the city

Toyota expects its dynamically styled Prius c hatchback will have the best fuel economy in city driving of any vehicle without a charging plug.

Toyota expects its dynamically styled Prius c hatchback will have the best fuel economy in city driving of any vehicle without a charging plug.

Toyota Australia's executive director sales and marketing Matthew Callachor said the fuel-economy rating for Prius c on the city cycle will be even better than the third-generation Prius.

“We expect Prius c will be the fuel-economy champion in city traffic for vehicles that do not require a power socket for charging," Mr Callachor said.

“In the city - where Prius c is more than likely to spend most of its life - we expect it to be rated at 3.7 litres/100km*," he said.

“This compares with 3.9 litres/100km for the regular Prius and 4.2 for the thriftiest diesel.

“On those figures, Prius c will use almost 12 per cent less fuel in city driving than the current most economical diesel in Australia.

“That should add up to huge savings on fuel for customers of the city-friendly Prius c."

Mr Callachor said Prius c - due in local showrooms within three months - will be the gateway to an expanding Prius family that will build on the strength of the world’s premier eco-vehicle brand.

"Prius c will introduce Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology - the world’s most proven hybrid technology - to buyers who are looking for a smart, fun and affordable city car," Mr Callachor said.

As the first additional member of the expanding Prius family, Prius c will sit alongside the third-generation Prius already on sale in Australia.

They will be joined by the versatile new Prius v during the second quarter of 2012.

Prius c will be smaller and lighter than Prius, offering engaging driving dynamics with superior urban manoeuvrability from its proven hybrid powertrain.

Toyota has adapted its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology to the Prius c platform, redesigning the system’s major components to make them smaller, reduce weight and improve efficiency.

Smart packaging has resulted in key drivetrain components being located within the chassis to produce optimum interior space and handling.

Placement of the compact 1.5-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine, transaxle and power-control unit is designed to enhance weight distribution and lower the centre of gravity.

The hybrid battery and fuel tank are positioned together beneath the rear seat, ideally distributing their mass within the wheelbase to improve weight distribution and roominess.

Maximum power from the petrol-electric hybrid system is expected to be 74kW.

Standard safety features in Australia will include seven airbags, vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-skid brakes with brake assist, hill-start assist control and front seatbelt force limiters.

Global Prius sales have topped two million with more than 17,000 sold in Australia.

* Fuel consumption and emissions data will vary depending on driving conditions/style, vehicle conditions and options/accessories. Source of fuel consumption data: ADR 81/02 city cycle as at January 16, 2012.

Toyota Reveals NS4 Advanced Hybrid Concept

Toyota Reveals NS4 Advanced Hybrid Concept

Toyota today revealed the NS4 advanced plug-in hybrid concept vehicle at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The NS4 presents a Toyota vision for future mobility with a focus on connectivity and the human interface.

Toyota engineers were challenged to design a new mid-sized concept for potential global market introduction by 2015.

The NS4 concept is a dedicated plug-in hybrid, separate from the Prius family, designed with future mobility requirements in mind.

'In this digital age, cars are becoming another spoke in the wheel of our electronic connectivity,” said Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.

'NS4 demonstrates Toyota's take on the human connection to the car with technology that considers both emotional and rational relationships, person-to-car and car-to-society.

'The continued success of our conventional hybrid vehicles has laid strong groundwork for market acceptance of future advanced technologies.

'NS4 demonstrates Toyota's ongoing commitment to enhancing the safety, efficiency and convenience of future mobility for people everywhere."

NS4's advanced powertrain targets a next-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive plug-in system that is smaller and lighter with improved fuel economy, better acceleration and longer electric range, while maintaining a short charge time.

Sleek, futuristic styling
The NS4 concept signals a new styling direction for Toyota, aimed at creating an emotional connection with consumers.

Styling lines reflect a new take on aerodynamics with a low vehicle height and cabin-forward tilt.

The distinctive open trapezoid grille is accented by a floating lower spoiler and wing-like daytime running lights wrapping around to a sculpted fender.

Rear lamps wrap around the sides of the vehicle to quarter sections layered into blistered fenders, while the rear lamp wings create a sharp edge and the effect of a rear spoiler.

The A-pillars are ultra thin for improved driver visibility while maintaining roof-crush integrity. The roof-line profile, liftback design and powered swan-wing doors create greater accessibility and efficient functionality.

Increased connectivity
The NS4 concept has a Human-Machine Interface (HMI) that is built around a multi-touch screen with the look and feel of a smartphone.

Simple and intuitive, it conveys information quickly with minimum distractions and maximum driver awareness. It will also direct air-conditioning, audio, battery-charge and navigation functions.

The HMI system is even capable of 'learning” driver preferences and habits to anticipate driver responses in specific environments and situations.

State-of-the-art safety features
The NS4 introduces a next-generation Pre-Collision System (PCS) with lane departure, rear-end and pedestrian collision-avoidance technologies designed to predict collisions under certain circumstances and help avoid them.

Using millimetre-wave radar, stereo cameras and near-infrared beams, it can help avoid collisions by applying the brakes and manipulating steering.

Adaptive Driving Beam headlights help prevent blinding glare to oncoming drivers and pedestrians at night.

NS4's pop-up bonnet structure automatically raises the rear of the bonnet to increase the space underneath, helping to reduce pedestrian head injuries caused by a collision with the front of the vehicle, within certain speed ranges.

A Blind Spot Monitor detects a vehicle in the adjacent lane and visually alerts the driver with indicators in the upper dash.

NS4 introduces four new glass technologies to improve driver visibility and reduce fuel consumption:

  • Hydrophobic coating – Fluorine-coated glass causes rain drops to form into semi-spherical shapes for improved visibility.
  • Anti-fog film – A high-performance resin with anti-fogging characteristics and increased durability.
  • ofHigh ultraviolet (UV) absorbing inner-layer – Removes 99 per cent of harmful UVA and UVB rays.
  • Anti-solar film with radio-wave transparency – Reduces the internal vehicle temperature and improves electronic device functionality

Inner and outer rear-view mirrors have been replaced with cameras that provide the driver with a wider view than conventional rear-view mirrors.

Toyota leads sales for ninth consecutive year

Toyota leads sales for ninth consecutive year.

Toyota has overcome production disruptions caused by a tsunami in Japan and floods in Thailand to be the top-selling automotive brand for 2011.

Official figures released today show Toyota's market-leading performance helped lift the automotive industry past one million sales for only the fourth year.

Australians bought 1,008,437 new vehicles in 2011, of which 181,624 carried the Toyota badge - a level never reached by any other car company.

It was the ninth year in a row Toyota has been Australia's most popular automotive brand.

Toyota's total was more than 55,500 ahead of its nearest rival - an additional 1,000 sales every week.

Toyota's executive vice president David Buttner said Toyota's sales result was restricted by lack of supply due to the impact of the natural disasters.

"Those missing Toyota sales are due to vehicles that simply were not built due to the disruptions that occurred to production," Mr Buttner said.

"There is no doubt that, if those vehicles had arrived at Toyota dealerships, our sales in Australia would have topped 200,000."

Toyota's Corolla was Australia's best-selling vehicle for five months of the year - in January and from September through to December. A total of 36,087 Corolla sedans and hatches were sold to local motorists.

Corolla was pipped by HiLux as Toyota's biggest seller for the year with 36,124 deliveries. HiLux was Australia's best-selling ute, best-selling four-wheel drive and best-selling light-commercial vehicle. It was the outright best seller in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Camry was Australia's top-selling mid-size car for the 18th year in a row - an unbroken run that began in 1994. The seventh-generation Camry went on sale in late 2011 and will be followed by the Camry Hybrid in 2012.

Toyota was the only manufacturer with three vehicles among the top 10 sellers - HiLux, Corolla and Camry.

HiLux two-wheel drive, HiLux four-wheel drive, Camry, LandCruiser wagon and HiAce bus were all leaders in their respective market segments in 2011.

Mr Buttner said Toyota was Australia's leading automotive exporter with Camry, Camry Hybrid and Aurion sedans shipped to the Middle East and other markets.

FJ Cruiser scoops 4X4 of the year award

FJ Cruiser scoops 4X4 of the year award.

Toyota's FJ Cruiser capped off its first year on sale in Australia by winning 4x4 Australia magazine's 4x4 of the Year title.

FJ Cruiser beat the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel, Range Rover Vogue TDV8 and Mercedes-Benz G 350 BlueTEC to take the top prize.

4x4 Australia editor Fraser Stronach said FJ Cruiser had finished the competition strongly, winning favour with the six experienced judges.

"Coming into the week-long 4x4 of the Year test, the FJ Cruiser was very much the outsider and a good deal behind," Mr Stronach said.

"But as the testing unfolded and the kilometres rolled by, the FJ proved itself to be the real deal and not just a ‘look-at-me wannabe'.

"Don't be fooled by the FJ Cruiser's toy-car styling as, underneath, lies the well-proven and robust mechanicals of Toyota's immensely popular Prado."

Toyota Australia executive vice president David Buttner said the award recognised Toyota's concerted effort to bring exciting new products to the market.

"FJ Cruiser underlines Toyota's prowess in four-wheel drive vehicle design backed by popular retro styling," Mr Buttner said.

"It is the latest vehicle in the Toyota range to bring renewed energy to our brand alongside the Rukus and the upcoming 86 sports car."

4x4 Australia magazine will publish the 4x4 of the Year feature in its February 2012 edition.

Add car servicing to your Christmas wish list

Having your vehicle serviced before heading off on holiday gives you a better chance of trouble-free holiday motoring.

Toyota is advising motorists to include car servicing and safety checks in their preparations for Christmas holiday road trips.

Regularly serviced vehicles handle well, use less fuel and are more reliable on the road.

Having your vehicle serviced before heading off on holiday gives you a better chance of trouble-free holiday motoring.

Desmond Lew, Divisional Manager of National Parts and Accessories at Toyota Australia, says that it is wise to avoid the holiday rush.

"The lead-up to the Christmas holiday period is a busy time for everyone, including Toyota Service Centres, so it's a good idea to plan ahead and book your scheduled service in early.

"Toyota dealerships offer safety checks for cars that are in between their scheduled service, giving you peace of mind when the family is on the road these holidays."

Mr Lew also says: "Discussing your driving habits with your Toyota Service Advisor will enable them to give the best possible guidance on when your Toyota should be serviced."

Toyota Service Centres have access to factory-developed diagnostic equipment to accurately assess the health of a Toyota.

You're also guaranteed that only Toyota-trained Technicians will be working on your car.

They also use Toyota Genuine Parts, which have been engineered specifically for each vehicle and rigorously tested as only Toyota can for its own cars.

Corolla tops sales chart for fourth time in 2011

Corolla tops sales chart for fourth time in 2011

Toyota's Corolla was Australia's best-selling vehicle last month - its fourth victory this year.

The popularity of Corolla helped push Toyota sales beyond 17,400 for the month - a margin of more than 7,600 ahead of its nearest rival.

Toyota now has an overall lead this year of more than 50,000 sales over any other company.

Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said the company's results this year were remarkable.

"Toyota's market-leading results have demonstrated the company's resilience globally in overcoming obstacles such as the Japan earthquake and tsunami and the Thailand floods," Mr Buttner said.

"Here in Australia, Toyota's success has helped the overall market to strong results in recent months, lifting to more than 925,000 at the end of November.

"This should ensure the industry passes one million this year, which would be only the fourth time in its history."

Toyota's November results included nine vehicles that were leaders in their respective segments - Corolla, Yaris, Camry, RAV4, LandCruiser 200, HiLux 4x2, HiLux 4x4, HiAce bus and HiAce van.

For the year so far, HiLux is the best-selling Toyota vehicle with its November total of 3,332 lifting the popular workhorse to 34,501 sales in 2011 compared with 32,468 for Corolla.

Camry is in run-out ahead of a new-model launch, which will be followed in the new year by next-generation Camry Hybrid and Aurion.

Toyota Chief Promises "More Fun"

Sun Safety Message for Drivers and Their Passengers

Toyota has used the unveiling of its new 86 sports coupe to declare its commitment to producing more 'fun-to-drive' cars.

Global president Akio Toyoda said cars must have an emotional presence that inspires drivers.

"Personally, I love the smell of petrol and the sound of an engine, so I hope that this type of vehicle never disappears," Mr Toyoda said.

"I hope that motor vehicles will continue to provide dreams and inspiration to people for all eras.

"I believe that if it is not fun, it is not a car."

Mr Toyoda said that, no matter how advanced cars become, it was important to retain the anticipation of buying a new car and the excitement of gripping the steering wheel and driving.

"Today it is said that young people have little interest in cars as there are much more interesting things.

"As an automobile maker, I find this quite frustrating.

"It is for this reason that we are committed to making cars that will evoke this feeling of 'fun to drive, again' in as many people as possible.

"This is Toyota's declaration."

Sun Safety Message for Drivers and Their Passengers

Sun Safety Message for Drivers and Their Passengers

Rugby League legend and host of popular fishing show Escape with ET Andrew Ettingshausen has joined the Melanoma Institute of Australia ahead of the summer months in urging Australians to be sun conscious while driving.

Lisa Sampson, spokesperson for the Institute advises that people can be vulnerable to the harmful effects of the sun while travelling in motor vehicles.

"UV exposure from the sun has been proven to increase the risk of melanoma.

"It is important for drivers and passengers to protect themselves from the sun while travelling in the car by wearing long sleeves, applying sun screen and wearing sunglasses when driving into the sun," said Ms Sampson.

When sunlight penetrates the top layers of the skin, ultraviolet radiation (referred to as UVA or UVB) damages the DNA inside the skin cells.

Tinted window film that blocks UVA and UVB can be an effective part of protecting occupants from sun damage.

Desmond Lew, Divisional Manager National Parts and Accessories Toyota Australia, says that Toyota Genuine Window tint offers drivers and their occupants significant protection from the sun.

"Toyota Genuine Window Tint was awarded the highest rating of UPF 50+ by the Australian Radiation Protection & Nuclear Safety Agency.

"The tests also concluded Toyota Genuine window tint rejects 99 per cent of UVA and UVB rays.

"It is produced in partnership with 3M and pre-cut to fit your Toyota perfectly," said Mr Lew.

Andrew Ettingshausen says he tries to ensure his family practises good sun safety, and recently had his windows tinted with Toyota Genuine Window Tint.

"We lead a very active outdoors lifestyle, so I protect my family from the sun wherever possible," said Ettingshausen.

The Institute has five tips for being sun safe outdoors.

When you are exposed to the sun always wear sun screen, a broad-brimmed hat, wrap-around sunglasses, protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest part of the day.

Toyota unveils new '86' sports car

Toyota unveils new 86 sports car

Toyota has taken the wraps off its newest sports car, announcing it will be called Toyota 86 or "hachi roku" in its home market, Japan.

The unveiling occurred when Toyota president Akio Toyoda drove a production prototype down the main straight of the Fuji Speedway, south of Tokyo.

Mr Toyoda said the new rear-wheel-drive sports car was all about "waku doki" - a car that creates excitement and gets your heart racing.

"I am very proud of this car," Mr Toyoda said. "Thank you for the patience of car lovers. They are going to enjoy this car."

The 86 is a rear-wheel-drive car with intuitive handling that embodies the essence of driving enjoyment.

It features the world's first horizontally opposed D-4S engine, combining "boxer" engine technology with Toyota's cutting-edge D-4S direct injection technology.

The engine is installed front mid-ship to create an ultra-low centre of gravity and low inertia. It is the world's only horizontally opposed engine and rear-wheel-drive package.

As a result, the 86 offers fun driving at a level unprecedented in earlier sports cars.

Toyota unveils new 86 sports car

It carries on the spirit of the AE86 Corolla in its aim to be a car that evolves with its owner.

The lightweight and compact rear-wheel-drive platform was designed to achieve superior handling and create the world's smallest mass-production four-passenger sports car (by volume).

The vehicle's newly developed engine delivers exceptional output and torque as well as superior response at low and medium speeds.

The D-4S, with separate twin injectors for both direct injection and port injection, boasts a high compression ratio of 12.5:1. This provides high output and high torque over a wide range of engine speeds and contributes to improved environmental performance.

The engine's redline is 7500rpm with maximum output of 147kW. Even so, the engine achieves fuel efficiency and environmental performance that rivals that of a standard two-litre sedan.

Customers will have the choice of a six-speed manual transmission or a special sports-driving six-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota unveils new 86 sports car

The 86 has the lowest hip-point of any Toyota-brand production vehicle and creates a driving position suited for driving enjoyment.

The rear seatbacks fold down to the front to create a luggage space that can accommodate four sports wheels or two golf bags.

The exterior design features a predatory look at the front; the sides are a modern take on Toyota's sports-car heritage; and the rear view is wide and sturdy despite the compact cabin.

The interior design seeks the essence of sports cars by emphasising the form, placement and materials of each element.

The seatbacks and cushion surfaces are designed to provide support during acceleration g-forces from the front, the back and to the sides. In addition, the shape of the front seats is designed to prevent elbows from interfering with gearshift operation.

The circular steering wheel has a diameter of 365 mm, the smallest in a Toyota-brand vehicle. The wheel's surface was optimised with exhaustive feedback from test drivers to enhance steering performance and grip.

A three-cluster meter built around the tachometer has been designed with particular attention paid to display placement, markings and typeface to enhance visibility and readability during sports driving.

Toyota: five world premiers at Tokyo

Toyota today announced five world premieres for the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show, including the prototype of its new compact sports car.

The unveiling of the stunning coupe will be joined by global debuts of the Prius C compact city car and three ground-breaking concepts - a next-generation hydrogen fuel-cell sedan, an ultra-compact electric car and a quirky vehicle known as the Fun-Vii.

A joint development with Fuji Heavy Industries, the car is destined to add appeal and excitement to the Toyota brand by reaffirming the joy of driving.

Toyota's return to the sports-car market is in response to an edict by global president Akio Toyoda for the company to re-connect with younger buyers by producing fun-to-drive models.

The spiritual successor to Toyota's illustrious sports-car heritage that includes names such as Supra and MR2, the new coupe is due in Australian showrooms around the middle of next year.

Prius C (world premiere)

Ahead of the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota has released the first official details of the Prius C, a compact city car that will be launched in Australia next year.

Prius C combines the features of a Yaris-sized car with a hybrid vehicle to deliver a fun-to-drive compact vehicle with excellent fuel economy.

The Australian launch of Prius C in the first quarter of 2012 is destined to bring the benefits of hybrid ownership to a much wider audience.

The body, at less than four metres long, promises nimble handling while its stylish proportions and low height are designed to enhance aerodynamic performance.

Prius C features a compact and lightweight hybrid system - a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a high-output motor - that achieves 35-40 kilometres per litre on the official Japanese test cycles.

Engine and hybrid components are arranged to deliver a low centre of gravity that contributes to spirited driving while the interior offers high levels of comfort and ample luggage space.

Prius C is due to be launched late next month in Japan, where it will be called Aqua.

Key dimensions of Prius C are: length 3995mm, width 1695mm, height 1445mm, wheelbase 2550mm, seating 5.

FCV-R (world premiere)

This concept model is a highly practical fuel-cell vehicle (FCV) that is planned for launch in about 2015.

It is fuelled by hydrogen, a promising source of CO2 emission-free energy that can be produced from a variety of sources and is easy to store and transport.

With the fuel-cell unit located beneath the specially designed body, the vehicle can accommodate up to four passengers and boasts impressive luggage space.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) says the fuel cell stack, consisting of a 70MPa high-pressure hydrogen tank, has been improved to provide a cruising distance of approximately 700km under test conditions.

Key dimensions of the FCV-R are: length 4745mm, width 1790mm, height 1510mm, wheelbase 2700mm, seating 4.

FT-EV III (world premiere)

The latest in a series of electric concept cars, the FT-EV III is an ultra-compact and lightweight package suitable for short-distance trips.

Equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the FT-EV III achieves an estimated cruising range of 105km on a fully charged battery.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) is developing electric vehicles with the aim of launching a car next year that is suitable for short-distance travel.

Toyota says electric vehicles with zero CO2 emissions are important eco-cars of the future that have the potential to replace cars fuelled by petrol.

Key dimensions of the FT-EV III are: length 3110mm, width 1680mm, height 1500mm, wheelbase 2000mm, seating 4.

Toyota Fun-Vii (world premiere)

This quirky concept vehicle heralds a future where people, cars and society are linked.

It is a key exhibit for the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show, which is being staged under the theme "Mobility can change the world".

Prius Plug-in Hybrid (Japan premiere)

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid, an environment-friendly vehicle that combines features from both pure-electric and petrol-electric hybrid vehicles, is equipped with a new, high-capacity lithium-ion battery that can be charged from a household outlet.

Able to operate as an electric vehicle on short trips and as a petrol-electric hybrid vehicle on medium to long trips, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid can be used regardless of battery charge status or the availability of charging infrastructure.

With this vehicle, TMC aims to address environmental issues such as the reduction of fossil fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and atmospheric pollution.

A production model is planned for launch by TMC in early 2012 with an EV cruising range on fully charged battery of 23.4km, positioning the plug-in hybrid as a leading next-generation eco-car coming after petrol-electric hybrid vehicles.

The plug-in hybrid vehicle represents the technology TMC considers best suited for widespread use to meet CO2 emissions restrictions and the diversification of energy.

Other activities

Separately from the motor show, at nearby Mega Web, TMC will hold hands-on events that will allow visitors the opportunity to test-drive some of the display vehicles and experience future technologies.

TMC will also create a Tokyo Motor Show portal site to stream information from the show along with virtual events introduced on the GAZOO Metapolis site.

Toyota Corolla and Toyota HiLux lead vehicle sales

Corolla & HiLux lead vehicle sales

Toyota Corolla and Toyota HiLux were Australia’s best-selling vehicles last month.

Corolla grabbed the top spot for the second consecutive month – its third victory this year – with almost 3,600 sales.

It narrowly beat HiLux which recorded close to 3,500 deliveries, making the popular workhorse the best-selling Toyota so far this year.

Toyota dealers have delivered in excess of 148,600 cars, SUVs and light-commercial vehicles so far this year – or more than 42,000 ahead of any other company.

Toyota accounted for better than one out of every five sales last month as the industry posted its strongest October since 2007.

October was the third month in a row where total industry sales were higher than the corresponding month of the previous year.

Local buyers made Camry Australia's best-selling mid-size car with more than 2,700 sales – five times higher than its nearest segment rival.

Other Toyota vehicles topping their segments in October were RAV4, LandCruiser 200 Series wagon and HiAce commuter bus.

How sweet it is! Toyota sugar-coats its cars

How sweet it is!

Sugar cane has been converted into ethanol to power cars – and now it is being transformed by Toyota into “ecological plastic” for car interiors.

The newly developed bio-plastic derived from sugar cane has enabled Toyota to cover approximately 80 per cent of the interior surface area of a production car with eco-plastics.

The latest material is used in high-use areas such as the seat trim and carpets because it dramatically outperforms other bio-plastics in terms of heat-resistance, durability and shrink-resistance.

It also matches the performance, including cost, of petroleum-derived plastics.

Toyota achieved the world's highest level* of bio-plastics in a vehicle by using it to cover 60 per cent of the exposed surfaces of interior parts in the Sai hybrid sedan, launched in Japan in December 2009.

It has now ramped-up the use of bio-plastics to 80 per cent with the introduction of the new material derived from sugar cane.

The latest ecological plastic is produced by varying the formula for making polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly used for products such as soft-drink bottles.

TMC believes ecological plastic is instrumental for cutting CO2 emissions and for using fewer petroleum resources over the lifecycle of a vehicle, from manufacturing through to disposal.

The environmental advantage is that the raw material is derived from plants, which absorb CO2 from the atmosphere as they grow, rather than from petroleum-derived plastics.

Toyota considers this environmental technology has increased benefits when used in mass-produced products such as automobiles.

Toyota Australia's Altona Manufacturing Operations Disrupted

Toyota Australia's Altona vehicle manufacturing plant today stopped production due to the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the Communications, Electrical, Electronic, Energy, Information, Postal, Plumbing and Allied Services Union of Australia's members taking protected industrial action in the form of a 24 hour stoppage.

The stoppage impacts the Altona manufacturing plant and Toyota Parts Centres in Melbourne and Sydney.

The company had offered a wage increase proposal of 11 per cent over 39 months in late July and yesterday following the Unions' request, offered three options for a 7 per cent increase over 2 years plus a bonus. All offers were rejected by the Unions.

Toyota Australia deeply regrets any inconvenience caused to its valued customers, suppliers and dealers who are impacted by this action.

The company is disappointed that industrial action is taking place. Toyota Australia values its employees and believes its offers have been fair and reasonable.

Toyota Australia continues to be willing to hold discussions with the Unions and employees to achieve an agreement.

The Altona plant produces the 4-cylinder Camry, Hybrid Camry, and 6-cylinder Aurion models. More than 3300 employees build 559 cars per day, for domestic and export customers. Toyota Australia produced more than 119,000 vehicles in 2010. The Melbourne and Sydney Parts Centres distribute Toyota parts and accessories nationally.

Toyota Australia announces Dyna recall

Toyota Australia has initiated a vehicle safety recall on Toyota Dyna vehicles produced from October 2000 to August 2004.
A total of 732 Toyota Dyna vehicles are involved in Australia.

Condition:
On some vehicles, if the front wheels are subject to a large external force such as running over a large pot hole or bump on the road at high speed, there is the possibility that the wheels and steering may vibrate, which in the worst case may affect the vehicle’s controllability. However, as the vehicle’s speed is reduced the vibration diminishes.

Situation:
There have been no cases of the condition reported in Australia for Toyota Dyna vehicles. There have been no accidents or injury associated with this condition.

Next steps:
This safety recall is a preventative action. Customers can continue to drive their vehicles.
Toyota Australia will contact affected Toyota Dyna owners by mail at their last known address in September, advising them to make an appointment with their preferred Toyota Dyna Dealer. This recall activity will be conducted free of charge.

Toyota unveils seventh-generation Camry

Seventh generation Toyota Camry
Toyota Australia today was a major participant in the global reveal of the all-new seventh-generation Camry.

The simultaneous launch of the new mid-sized vehicle in global markets signifies a strong resolve from Toyota Motor Corporation.

The Australian Camry range will feature a unique model variant named Atara.

Toyota Camry debuts a new design with a more spacious interior, improved driving dynamics and an even quieter ride.

Every exterior body panel on Camry is new.

A new 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivers more responsive performance and better fuel economy.

Camry will now be fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission – replacing the current generation's five-speed.

Interior space has been further increased, especially for rear-seat passengers.

Camry and Atara sedans for the Australian market will be built at the company's manufacturing plant in the Melbourne suburb of Altona.

New Camry, including Atara, will arrive in local dealership showrooms from late November.

A new Camry Hybrid, also built in Australia, will be released in the first quarter of 2012.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director of sales and marketing David Buttner said next-generation Camry is a new-era car with more sophistication, greater emotional appeal and enhanced rational reasons for purchase.

"Camry is the smart, safe and worry-free leader of the Toyota brand – a symbol of Toyota's benchmark quality, durability and reliability," he said.

"The next-generation car is intended to do everything better, which is important because our loyal Camry owners have big expectations."

Mr Buttner said the introduction of the Atara badge would add an extra dimension to the Camry brand, appearing on Camry models targeted mainly at private buyers and the user-chooser segment of the fleet market.

"We believe the introduction of Atara reflects the added style and sophistication of the new range."

"Atara signifies that next-generation Camry will lead its segment with overall specification, performance, quality and value that are appreciated by Australian motorists," he said.

Atara has two origins:

  • A Hebrew word for "crown" – which is a natural extension of Camry, which also means crown.
  • A derivation of the Japanese word "atarashii", which means "new".

All new Camry models will be equipped with vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-skid brakes, brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.

Toyota Australia expects a strong five-star ANCAP rating.

New Toyota Camry - modern, sophisticated styling

Seventh generation Toyota Camry

Every exterior panel on Toyota Camry is new.

New Camry's exterior is elegantly simple yet modern, emphasising a wide, low stance.

Crisp, precise character lines, a strongly curved door cross-section and more defined rocker panel mouldings deliver a more expressive appearance.

Headlights have a more dynamic shape, with a pronounced curvature of the main-beam unit merging into the bumper cover.

The taillights wrap tightly into the body sides, with their top sections extending into the bootlid.

Camry Atara, unveiled exclusively in Australia, has its own lower-body design and mesh upper grille section.

Atara features a three-part lower grille section that houses foglamps.

Atara's more prominent rocker panel mouldings cleanly link to integrated front and rear under-body spoilers, emphasising width.

While the new Camry's external dimensions are very similar to the previous generation, it has a more inviting and spacious interior as well as a greater perception of space.

A new dashboard design, modified seat locations, redesigned seats and 'lean' door, pillar and headliner trim all combine to add interior space and improve visibility.

Repositioning the driver's seat and the tilt-telescopic steering wheel provide better visibility and positioning for the driver.

The accelerator pedal and front seats have been moved forward while the rear-seat hip point was moved back.

The result is that the couple distance (the length between the hip points of occupants in the front and rear seats) has been increased by 15mm.

Together with clever sculpting of the new front seatbacks, rear knee room has been improved by 46mm.

Further details of the new Camry interior will be released closer to the car's launch in late November.

New Camry engine: more power, less fuel

Seventh generation Toyota Camry
Next-generation Camry will be powered by a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that produces more power while using less fuel.

The new fuel-efficient and more environmentally sustainable engine will be built at Altona from the latter half of 2012.

Approximately $300 million of investment will be injected into the Australian economy to build the new engine line.

Toyota's new engine boosts Camry's power by more than 10 per cent and lifts torque by more than five per cent - including solid gains in the mid range.

At the same time as achieving more power and torque, new Camry uses substantially less fuel - around 10 per cent*.

Atara grades will produce a little more power and torque, thanks to improved twin exhaust manifolds.

The new range is equipped exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission that offers a sequential manual shift mode.

On Atara models, it can be operated with paddle shifts at the driver's fingertips for sporty driving and greater enjoyment.

All new Camry models, including Atara, feature Toyota's latest electric power steering system.

The system regulates assistance based on vehicle speed - light effort for parking and moderate effort at higher speeds.

It helps fuel economy because electricity is consumed only when power assistance is necessary - and it's more friendly to the environment because there's no hydraulic fluid.

Long-praised as a benchmark for quietness in the mid-size segment, new Camry resets the standard with an even higher level of refinement.

New or additional sound-absorbing devices have been placed in areas where noticeable sounds can enter the cabin.

In particular, engineers focused on suppressing noises that are near the frequencies of human speech to provide an environment that is more comfortable for conversation.

A more rigid body structure, revised suspension and new aerodynamic aids all contribute to greater straight-line stability, crisper steering response and overall ride comfort.

The taillights and side-view mirrors incorporate aero-stabilising fins which create air vortexes that stabilise the body and contribute to handling stability.

Under-body aerodynamic elements regulate airflow, also contributing to ride smoothness.

Camry - built in Australia for 24 years

Seventh generation Toyota Camry
Toyota has produced more than 1.6 million Camry sedans in Australia since commencing production of the car in 1987.

Camry has been Australia's best-selling mid-size car for the past 17 years running and is the country's leading automotive export.

Shipments to the Middle East, Toyota Australia's main export market, began in 1996 and have taken off since the early 2000s.

So far, Camry deliveries to overseas customers have topped 850,000 - half of all Camrys produced in Australia.

Today, approximately 75 per cent of Toyota's local production - built at the company's Altona factory in Melbourne - is destined for overseas customers.

Last year, more than 70,000 Altona-built Camry sedans were exported.

Camry is a global car and the backbone of Toyota. Nearly 15 million have been sold in more than 100 countries.

Last year, 60,000 Camrys a month were delivered to customers around the world. Half were sold in the United States and about one-fifth in China.

Remarkably, Australia is the third-biggest country for Camry sales with more than 25,000 delivered to local customers last year.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director of sales and marketing David Buttner said the global reveal of the next-generation Camry, including the unique-to-Australia Camry Atara, was a special moment for Australia.

"It was in Australia that Toyota first tasted success beyond its Japanese domestic market," Mr Buttner said.

"Local breakthroughs include the first LandCruiser imports from the late 1950s, the first production outside Japan from 1963 and the first country to export Camry apart from the parent company itself."

"It is a proud record which has earned Australia a special place in Toyota's history," he said.

New Camry - supporting the Australian economy

Seventh generation Toyota Camry
Toyota Australia's next-generation Camry sedan will generate substantial economic activity over the next five years.

The benefits are derived from new Camry's contribution to:

  • employment of more than 16,000 Australians by Toyota and its dealers
  • significant investment to gear-up for local production
  • extensive purchases from local suppliers
  • revenue from sales to Australian customers, and
  • substantial earnings as the nation's biggest and most valuable automotive export.

The company's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said today Australian motorists accounted for approximately 25 per cent of local Camry production with the balance sold in export markets, mainly the Middle East.

Since 1996, Toyota Australia's Camry exports have exceeded 850,000 to a total of more than 20 destinations, including Saudi Arabia, other Middle East countries, New Zealand and Pacific nations.

Last year, almost 96,000 Camry sedans were produced in Australia with more than 70,000 exported and a further 25,000 sold in Australia.

"Toyota Camry is a significant contributor to the Australian economy," Mr Buttner said.

"Camry plays a dominant role in our local manufacturing operation, which directly supports approximately 3,200 jobs in Melbourne and thousands more people employed by our local suppliers," he said.

"Toyota buys more than $2.8 billion a year of goods and services from 1,274 local supplier companies.

"Toyota has invested heavily in tooling, equipment and manufacturing facilities for the new Camry.

"This includes redevelopment of the engine plant involving project expenditure of more than $300 million being injected into the Australian economy.

"In addition, Toyota's 278 dealership outlets play significant roles in the national economy and in the welfare of their local communities.

"Toyota dealers employ more than 12,000 staff. They inject $340 million buying goods and services within their local communities.

"We are also looking to the future, with more than 1,000 apprentices employed throughout the Toyota dealership network."

Mr Buttner said Toyota dealers would invest $119 million this financial year to provide new and expanded showrooms and service centres as well as advanced training for technicians.

He said developments would take place at 82 sites, mostly in Queensland and NSW.

"Dealers have invested more than $563 million in facilities over the past five years. Their investment is expected to continue to average about $100 million a year over the next five years," Mr Buttner said.

Toyota Prius gains praise from scientists

Toyota Prius gains praise from scientists

Toyota's Prius delivers "a more than 40 per cent reduction in global warming pollution compared with its closest conventional models"*.

That is the finding of the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), a US non-profit organisation that placed Prius at the top of its hybrid scorecard.

The UCS said Prius achieved the highest rating among non-luxury cars for its environmental improvement through the use of hybrid technology.

The scorecard - the most comprehensive rating system of how well carmakers use hybrid technology - evaluated 34 hybrids for factors including fuel efficiency, environmental improvement and consumer value.

The UCS said many carmakers were now using hybrid technology to "boost fuel economy and cut pollution without breaking the bank" for consumers.

Toyota's Prius uses just 3.9 litres/100km while Camry Hybrid is rated at 6.0 litres/100km**.

Both cars have been awarded the maximum five stars for environmental performance on the Federal Government’s Green Vehicle Guide.

Desert walk for dialysis

Desert walk for dialysis

Ken McGregor, a visual artist manager and art consultant to Art Series Hotels, left Alice Springs on August 1 and plans to walk 1500km to Kiwirrkurra in Western Australia to raise funds for kidney dialysis.

He aims to raise more than $100,000 for the Western Desert Dialysis Appeal being run by the Nganampa Walytja Palyanjaku Tjutka Aboriginal Corporation .

Over the month he’ll average 40-50km a day to help fund the operating costs of the mobile dialysis unit and Purple House dialysis clinic.

The mobile dialysis unit vehicle is being built in Adelaide and is designed to handle the remote, corrugated desert roads. It will deliver much-needed treatment to the isolated communities, so kidney disease sufferers can continue to live close to their families.

Ken McGregor said he hopes publicity from his desert walk will highlight the problem of kidney disease. Ken said if he had to, he’d do it on his hands and knees.

Desert communities began the program in 1999–2000, when 50 artists created works which raised $1million at an auction at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

His support crew for the desert walk, including a photographer and videographer, is using a four-wheel-drive Toyota FJ Cruiser

Donations can me made here.

Ken McGregor has also produced a coffee-table book, Portraits of Western Desert Artists, with royalties from sales to be donated to the Desert Walk.

Local input improves Yaris for Australia

Local input improves Yaris for Australia

Local Toyota engineers have ensured the next-generation Yaris hatch will suit Australian conditions and driver expectations.

The Toyota Technical Centre in Melbourne contributed to the steering calibration, which delivers the type of feedback and directness appreciated in this market.

The local engineers also confirmed the overall chassis package for Australia which provides sharp handling - similar to that preferred by European drivers.

Next-generation Yaris is highly suited to city driving with an urban-friendly, tight turning circle of just 9.4 metres.

The adoption of electric power steering provides added assistance at parking speeds while requiring relatively small steering input on roads that require frequent turning with narrow corners.

Body rigidity has been improved to reduce twisting and torsion as well as excess suspension movements, particularly at the rear.

The result is greater driving enjoyment, better rear-wheel grip, sharper steering response and improved driving stability during turning.

New Yaris will build on the current car's strengths - efficient engines and easy-to-drive character, especially around town - by offering even greater agility.

New Yaris will be launched in Australia in October.

Toyota named "World's Greenest Brand"

Toyota is the world's greenest brand with a key contributor being its development of full hybrid technology. (Camry Hybrid shown)

Toyota is the world's greenest brand, according to a new global survey.

The research – called Best Global Green Brands – placed Toyota ahead of industrial conglomerate 3M and engineering group Siemens as well as all other automotive brands.

Conducted by international brand consultancy Interbrand, the study combines public perception of environmental sustainability with a demonstration of that performance based on publicly available information and data.

The report says Toyota is a leading example of making the environment a core management priority, while also engaging in a meaningful way with audiences around the world.

It says environmental sustainability is deeply ingrained in the Toyota brand and the company continues to embark on company-wide initiatives to improve environmental performance each year.

Toyota's market-leading development of full hybrid technology is a key contributor to Toyota's strong green performance, according to the report, notably with Prius – now in its third generation.

Toyota has sold more than 3.2 million hybrid vehicles around the world, including Prius and Camry Hybrid .

Toyota's long-term approach towards sustainable operations is reflected in recent initiatives in Australia, including the decision to build a new state-of-the-art engine plant that will provide fuel-efficient engines for Camry and, for the first time, Camry Hybrid.

Toyota extends its Sales Lead

Toyota extends its Sales Lead

Toyota has extended its overall lead as Australia's top-selling carmaker with a market-leading performance in July.

Official figures released today show Toyota sold almost 13,000 vehicles last month, pushing its total above 98,000 for the year so far.

Toyota's August total was more than 2,100 ahead of any other carmaker, giving it an overall lead this year in excess of 24,700 vehicles.

Last month, five Toyotas – Camry, LandCruiser 200 Series, HiLux 4x2, HiLux 4x4 and HiAce bus – were the best-selling vehicles in their segments.

HiLux was one of only four vehicles in the country that topped 3,000 deliveries for the month.

Toyota dealers are expected to have solid levels of stock to meet customer orders and support its sales promotions, including Toyotathon.

Manufacturing plants supplying vehicles for the Australian market have worked hard to make up lost production due to Japan's tsunami.

Toyota's global parent company yesterday announced higher full-year forecasts for production and profits.

Toyota announces improved Safety Technologies

Toyota Australia launches Safe Driving Campaign

The new technologies are in response to alarming data about the growing proportion of pedestrians and older people who are killed in traffic accidents as well as the high incidence of night-time fatalities.

Designed to reduce accidents, injury and death, the systems include:

  • collision avoidance using millimetre-wave radar, stereo cameras and infra-red beams
  • glare-preventing adaptive headlights
  • a pop-up bonnet designed to lessen pedestrian injury, and
  • preventing accidents caused by sudden changes in a driver's physical condition, such as a heart attack.

Japan's National Police Agency says pedestrians now account for a higher proportion of the road toll than people inside vehicles, while people aged 65 or over make up more than half the number of traffic deaths.

In response, Toyota says it is developing vehicles designed to help avoid accidents.

One system improves driver "vision" with radar, cameras and – for night driving – near-infrared beams to enhance visibility.

Another is glare-preventing adaptive headlights that help prevent blinding other drivers while keeping the maximum possible light on the road ahead.

A newly developed pop-up system automatically raises the rear of the bonnet in a crash, providing more space between it and engine-bay components.

Toyota is also aiming to prevent major accidents if a driver suddenly suffers a heart attack or other serious physical condition.

This emergency-response technology involves detecting risk by monitoring cardiovascular functions through the driver's grasp of the steering wheel.

Camry: A Best Seller in Heartland USA and Australia

Camry a Best Seller in Heartland USA and Australia

The popular Toyota Camry has helped Australia and the US forge a new type of trans-Pacific alliance.

Camry has further entrenched itself as a best seller in the heartland of both nations during 2011.

In Australia, Camry is the best-selling mid-size car and the largest and most valuable automotive export.

Official sales figures for the first half of the year show Camry accounts for almost one-third of all sales in its market segment.

Its sales are more than two-and-a-half times higher than its closest competitor.

Domestic sales are only part of the story because Australian-built Camry sedans are also exported to the Middle East, a market which accounts for more than 10 per cent of Camry's global sales.

On the other side of the Pacific, Camry is the best-selling car in the world's biggest auto market, with 147,000 sales for the six months to 30 June.

Camry's latest success in the US comes after nine consecutive years as the number one selling car in that market.

Toyota Australia launches Safe Driving Campaign

Toyota Australia’s John Rowan and Sam Rigopoulos (right) with a Hybrid Camry in front of a safe driving sign.

Toyota, Australia's leading manufacturer, importer and exporter of cars has launched a new phase of its driver safety program for its 4,700 employees and their family and friends.

The Toyota Safe Driving Program: Looking Out For You has been developed to help Toyota employees and their family and friends recognise risky driving behaviour and take action to improve their safety.

The campaign features employee driver training, the latest edition of Toyota's Safe Driving Handbook and changes to the company's vehicle insurance excess and traffic infringement processing fees.

"There are almost 5,000 Toyota owned vehicles on Australia's roads and as the nation's number one automotive company, Toyota must lead the community in safe driving behaviour," Mr Rigopoulos said.

"Toyota Australia launched the Looking Out For You driver safety program in 2008. After some early improvement in accident rates, no further significant reductions have occurred and we want to change this."

He said that from 2008 to 2010 Toyota Australia employees or their family and friends were involved in 6,200 vehicle accidents, 153 employees were injured in vehicle accidents and more than 4,900 red light and speeding traffic infringements were issued.

"Nationally, on average, four people die and around 80 are seriously injured everyday1, meaning that almost everyone has, at some stage, been affected by a road accident," Mr Rigopoulos said.

"Toyota Australia's biggest asset is its people and one of the company's goals is zero harm, which applies to driving a vehicle as much as it does to the workplace.

"That's why Toyota Australia has abolished its first free insurance excess for 'at fault' accidents and introduced a variable cost incentive one. These changes aim to remind drivers that they are responsible for all aspects of their driving behaviour including any infringements or insurance excess that result from putting themselves or others at risk on the road through unsafe driving."

Mr Rigopoulos said that under the new insurance scheme unsafe driving resulting in at fault accidents and red light and speeding infringements would attract points, which would be allocated to a driver's profile and used to determine how much they must pay when submitting a vehicle insurance claim. Toyota Australia will also charge an administration fee through payroll for every traffic infringement noticed processed.

"We want all employees to arrive home safely every day. By arming employees and their family and friends with the latest information on how to drive safely, combined with the new skills they pick up during driver training, and by placing a cost on unsafe driving behaviour we hope to see a reduction in employee and family injuries and vehicle accidents," Mr Rigopoulos said.

Long-serving Prius keeps the peace

Long-serving Prius keeps the peace

A leading security company has a high-tech crime-fighting weapon – Toyota Prius, including one that has clocked up over 780,000km.

M.I.G. Security relies on its nine-strong Prius fleet for security patrols around Mandurah and surrounding areas, approximately 75km south of Perth.

Operations manager Paul Hiron says the longest-serving Prius, on patrol since 2005, is still going strong after 788,411km.

Mr Hiron says reliability is vital to their business as clients depend on the company to give them peace of mind.

He says Prius is ideal for the work – quiet, economical and comfortable. It is also ideal in stop-start traffic for fuel-efficiency and performs on the open road.

He says he would highly recommend Toyota Prius to private buyers, too.

Prius, with its petrol-electric Hybrid Synergy Drive® system, is cleaner than any petrol, diesel or hybrid production car sold in Australia with CO2 emissions of just 89 grams per kilometre. It uses just 3.9 litres of unleaded fuel for every 100km*.

*Fuel consumption and emissions will vary depending on driving conditions/style, vehicle conditions and options/accessories. Source of emissions and fuel consumption data: ADR 81/02 combined cycle.

Toyota sales to rebound in July

Toyota sales to rebound in July

Toyota Australia is confident its sales will rebound in July and August as stock levels return to normal.

Despite a severe shortage of vehicles in June, Toyota remains the clear market leader in 2011 with 85,100 sales – more than 22,500 ahead of its nearest rival.

Toyota said May and June sales had been significantly affected by production disruptions caused by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Production had returned to normal in Australia, Thailand and Japan – the three countries that provide cars for the local market.

During July, Toyota expects to receive almost all the vehicles that were ordered earlier in the year, providing customers with a wider choice of models, grades and colours.

By August, the number of vehicles available at Toyota dealerships will be back to normal – a remarkable turnaround.

Toyota thanked its customers for their understanding over the past two months.

In June, HiLux was one of the best-selling cars in the country with more than 3,000 sales while Corolla topped 2,100 sales and Camry retained its dominance of the medium-car segment.

Toyota at the Australian International Motor Show

Toyota at the Australian International Motor Show

Toyota is staging five premieres of stunning new concept and production cars at the Australian International Motor Show in July.

Australia's number-one car company will take the wraps off two new hybrid show cars, a driver-oriented sports-car concept, a Euro-inspired next-generation small car and an even tougher version of Australia’s favourite ute.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said: “This raft of new Toyota cars provides car lovers with a ‘motor show within the motor show’ and confirms Toyota is fast approaching an exciting new period for the brand and for our customers in Australia.”

The FT-86 II Concept is the clearest indication yet of the final design for Toyota’s next sports car, which is expected in Australia in mid-2012.

The Prius c Concept is the inspiration for an urban-friendly car aimed at young singles and couples who want a vehicle that is fun to drive, while being more affordable and having even better fuel economy than a Prius.

At the other end of the spectrum, Prius v is designed for young families with active lifestyles as well as fleet customers looking for a car with added space and flexibility plus exceptional fuel economy.

Next-generation Yaris hatch has been completely redesigned with a more expressive, Euro-inspired look plus an even more spacious interior.

An upgraded HiLux has new bodywork designed to ensure it will continue to dominate Australia’s ute landscape. New HiLux arrives from September.

Toyota has also chosen the motor show to announce the renewal of its sponsorship agreement as Premier Partner of the AFL for a further three years, reinforcing Toyota’s long-term commitment to the game at all levels.

Toyota vehicles cleared for radiation

Toyota Australia has welcomed the news that radiation monitoring carried out on Toyota vehicles arriving at Port Kembla on 23 June 2011 found radiation levels were within acceptable limits.

Recently the Maritime Union of Australia raised concerns that vessels containing vehicles being shipped from Japan to Australia may be contaminated with radioactive material.

On 23 June 2011, officials from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) conducted radiation monitoring on a shipment of cars carried on the vessel Trans Future 7 when it docked at Port Kembla, on route from Japan. The vessel's cargo included 646 new Toyota vehicles and 55 new Lexus vehicles.

On 24 June 2011, ARPANSA issued a media release stating that:

ARPANSA conducted radiation monitoring for potential contamination on a total of 102 cars, including 53 used cars, which was part of a consignment of 800 cars, using portable handheld radiation (gamma-ray) dose rate monitors and (beta/gamma) contamination monitors. ARPANSA monitored external and internal surfaces of these vehicles.

The measured radiation dose rates were within the normal range of background radiation and the contamination monitor count rates did not exceed the background count rate of the monitor.

Prior to their departure, the ARPANSA officials briefed the stevedore crew and the local union representative on the monitoring results that no contamination had been detected.

ARPANSA continues to advise that at this point in time it is not considered necessary to introduce any radiation screening measures for mail, sea or air cargo, or aircraft arriving from Japan. This is consistent with the approach being taken in a number of other countries, such as the UK, Canada and New Zealand.

Since April 2011, Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan has carried out random measurement of radiation levels of its export vehicles, as well as other component exports at Japanese export ports, for the peace of mind of customers. Testing is continuous and results to date show that radiation levels are substantially below the International Atomic Energy Agency allowable limits.

Furthermore, radiation levels recorded by the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association at locations where Toyota manufacture vehicles and the ports used for shipment are substantially below the allowable limits recommended by the IAEA.

Toyota calls for luxury car tax abolition

Toyota, Australia's leading manufacturer, importer and exporter of cars has recommended the abolition of the Federal Government's Luxury Car Tax, following reports of a tax loophole.

Toyota's recommendation to abolish the Luxury Car Tax is consistent with the 2010 Henry Tax Review.

Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said the Luxury Car Tax was inefficient, punitive and poorly designed.

"Toyota is Australia's number one luxury car brand according to the Luxury Car Tax regime. In 2010 the top two vehicles exceeding the Luxury Car Tax threshold were the Toyota Prado and LandCruiser with 15,423 and 7,273 car sales respectively," Mr Buttner said.

"The current Luxury Car Tax was introduced in 2000 and since then the price customers are prepared to pay for cars has risen. However the tax threshold has not kept pace and today customers have to pay an unfair tax on cars that exceed $57,466, a level that most people would not consider to be a luxury car."

Toyota Australia believes the tax also penalises people who customise their vehicles.

"With an increasing number of accessories, such as roof racks, bullbars and tow bars available as vehicle extras, vehicles priced below or on the cusp of the Luxury Car Tax threshold currently creep past the threshold once the accessories are added," Mr Buttner said.

He said the tax was discriminatory because it only applied to vehicles and no other luxury item.

"Toyota Australia and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries have long opposed the Luxury Car Tax on the basis that no other consumer product has an additional tax applied simply because the value of the product exceeds an arbitrary threshold."

"It is a tax people have to pay in addition to GST, stamp duty and registration fees when buying a new car. On top of that they pay tax on the fuel they use in their cars," Mr Buttner said.

"Toyota Australia would like to see the Luxury Car Tax abolished. But if not, then at the very least, it should be fundamentally reformed to feature a more realistic threshold and to exclude low emissions vehicles and parts and accessories from the tax," Mr Buttner said.

Your Money Magazine rates Toyota top for value

Your Money Magazine rates Toyota top for value

Your Money Magazine recently conducted an investigation to determine which car represented the 'best overall value' in Australia. Of the 30 lowest cost cars, 11 are Toyotas. Including winners in the light and large size car sections and placing in the top three for all but one of the categories.

To determine the true cost of owning and running a car, you need to take into account more than just purchase cost. You also need to include the depreciation cost and operating costs to understand how economical a particular model really is. This is exactly what Your Money Magazine recently did with a range of Australia’s top selling cars, and the results were impressive for Toyota.

The first thing assessed was the depreciation cost of the vehicles. This is the difference between what you pay when the car is new and then what the re-sale value is three years later. The enduring quality of the Toyota models proved a winner in regard to re-sale value (or value retained), always being amongst the highest in each group.

The second test determined the operating costs for each vehicle. These include fuel, insurance, registration, servicing and tyres and repairs.

After analysing hundreds of the most popular vehicles on the market, Your Money Magazine found the Toyota Yaris

The results also show Toyota enjoys relatively low depreciation in most of the light, small and SUV (4WD) classes. In fact, the Toyota LandCruiser Prado GX http://www.toyota.com.au/prado retains its value so well that Your Money Magazine calculates it costs $7.70 less per week to run than even the most economical mid-sized sedan.

In fact, 11 of the 30 lowest cost cars in the true-cost car tables are Toyotas.

These include:

Toyota expands Crash Dummy Family

Toyota expands Crash Dummy Family

Toyota has added a small female and a large male to its family of digital crash test dummies.

Known as THUMS (Total HUman Model for Safety), these virtual humans deliver crash-test results in much greater detail than is achievable with conventional crash-test dummies.

The new models of a 153cm tall female and a 189cm male will join the existing 179cm average-build adult male in THUMS.

All three models come in two types - a vehicle occupant and a pedestrian - bringing the total number of models to six.

It is now possible to take into account different body sizes when conducting analyses of internal injuries caused by car accidents.

This latest software upgrade is the result of a co-operative development arrangement with Toyota Central R&D Labs, Inc, universities and other research institutes to make detailed measurements of the human body’s internal structure using a high-precision CT (computed tomography) scanner.

By creating precise models of various internal organs, including their positions and how they interconnect, Toyota was able to develop a virtual human model containing approximately 14 times more information than the previous version.

This increased detail allows finer understanding of how damage is inflicted on internal organs during a collision.

As part of its vision to eliminate traffic fatalities and injuries, Toyota will apply the results of THUMS tests to develop safer vehicles.

Toyota has plans to add an elderly person and a child model to make an even more diverse range of testing possible.

THUMS allows highly detailed analysis of bone fractures, severed ligaments, etc, by simulating many characteristics of the human body - ranging from the shape of the body to its skeletal structure and skin.

Toyota began developing THUMS in 1997 in co-operation with Toyota Central R&D Labs, Inc.

Altona Resumes Pre-earthquake Vehicle Production

Toyota Australia’s Altona manufacturing plant will resume producing vehicles at pre-earthquake levels from tomorrow, 9 June.

Production at the plant has been reduced to 50 per cent of pre-earthquake levels since 9 May to manage available parts supply following the Japan earthquake and tsunami.

Toyota Australia Executive Director Manufacturing Chris Harrod said employees were looking forward to once again producing approximately 9,000 cars a month.

"The impact of the Japan earthquake has placed significant pressure on our people, suppliers, dealers and customers. It has been an unprecedented time for us and our global Toyota colleagues," Mr Harrod said.

"Since March, Toyota Australia has worked closely with its stakeholders to manage parts supply shortages, vehicle production adjustments, reduced vehicle imports and sales and customer concerns. I want to thank employees for the effort and perseverance undertaken to get our manufacturing operations back on track earlier than expected."

Toyota Australia confirmed plans for production of the next generation Camry were on track, with the launch scheduled for late 2011.

Mr Harrod said export sales had remained steady during this challenging period.

"Approximately 70 per cent of the vehicles produced at Altona are exported to the Middle East, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The reduced production volumes made fulfilling customer orders challenging, but by working with existing supply in the circumstances we were able to maintain good sales," he said.

He confirmed Toyota Australia dealers will have more new-vehicle stock arriving in June and a further increase in July.

"In July Toyota Australia will receive almost the full quota of imported cars we ordered for the month well before Japan's natural disasters occurred," Mr Harrod said.

"For the rest of the year, we expect our business will basically be back to normal, thanks to a fasterthan- expected pick-up in production in Japan and Thailand."

He said Toyota Australia appreciated the patience and understanding of customers who had been affected by delays in deliveries that were outside the control of the company or its dealer network.

New Yaris arrives in Fourth Quarter

New Yaris arrives in Fourth Quarter

Toyota's next-generation Yaris is set to arrive in Australia during the final quarter of 2011.

But Australian motorists will not have to wait that long for their first official glimpse.

A pre-production version of new Yaris will be a highlight of the Toyota stand at the Australian International Motor Show in early July.

The new hatch features a completely redesigned exterior and a substantial increase in cabin space.

As the image shows, designers sought a more expressive, Euro-inspired attitude for Yaris – also known in Japan as ‘Vitz’.

The resulting dynamic shape delivers greater on-road presence and suggests more responsive handling.

An agile and sophisticated silhouette was achieved by shaving the roofline by 15mm while lengthening the body by 100mm and the wheelbase by 50mm.

The pay-off is a much roomier cabin, especially for rear-seat occupants.

Clever features include UV-reducing glass in the front-door windows and a single windscreen wiper with an integrated washer nozzle for better cleaning.

Yaris has been a sales success in Australia since its launch in October 2005 when it replaced the Echo (which was known as the first-generation Yaris outside Australia).

Combined Echo and Yaris sales in this country led the light-car segment for six years from 2003 to 2008 and have contributed more than 200,000 of the global total, which now exceeds 3.5 million.

Last year, Yaris sales grew 10.3 per cent to 21,452 units

Toyota's Production pick-up will improve stock

Toyota's Production pick-up will improve stock

Toyota Australia dealers will have substantially more new-vehicle stock arriving in June and a further increase in July, the company said today.

Senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said there had been limited stock in May due to production disruptions around the world in the wake of Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Mr Buttner said the number of vehicles arriving this month from Toyota plants in Japan, Thailand and Australia would be almost double the May level, with priority being given to customers who had already placed orders.

"In July we will receive almost the full quota of cars we ordered well before Japan’s natural disasters occurred," Mr Buttner said.

"For the rest of the year, our business will basically be back to normal, thanks to a faster-than-expected pick-up in production."

Mr Buttner said he appreciated the patience and understanding of customers who had been affected by delays in deliveries that were outside the control of the company or its dealer network.

He said Toyota’s manufacturing divisions and suppliers had worked frantically to get production back on track more quickly than anyone had expected.

Production in Australia of Camry, Hybrid Camry and Aurion is set to return to pre-quake levels by the end of next week.

Thailand, which produces the popular HiLux, returned to normal production in May and is planning overtime to fill back-orders.

In Japan, where the rest of Toyota’s models are built for Australia, production is expected to return to 90 per cent of pre-quake levels during June and to match last year’s output for the full year.

Mr Buttner said Toyota Australia had deliberately avoided pursuing sales in May beyond the capacity to supply.

"We regard the respectful treatment of our customers and potential customers as a far more important measure of success than a single month’s sales,” Mr Buttner said.

According to the VFacts figures for May released today, Toyota remains the overall market leader so far this year with a substantial lead of 22,000 sales.

In May, it led the market in five individual segments, even with depleted stock: Camry (medium cars), HiLux (4x4 and 4x2 light-commercials), LandCruiser 200 Series (large SUVs) and HiAce (bus).

Marketing Consultant puts Celica ahead of his house!

Marketing Consultant puts Celica ahead of his house!

International marketing consultant Zarir Bamji freely admits to cherishing his 1990 Toyota Celica more than his house.

But then, not everyone owns what they believe is the best-maintained Toyota Celica of its vintage in the world.

The proof of Mr Bamji's devotion came when a savage hailstorm hit Sydney in the mid-1990s.

He chose to save his pristine 1990 Celica SX by driving it to the safety of a friend's garage – leaving his house and wife Sandra's car to suffer severe roof and window damage at the hands of Mother Nature.

Mr Bamji's gleaming pride and joy has now passed its 20th birthday with less than 29,000km on the clock – an average of just 1450km per year.

He says a car’s value is basically a factor of scarcity or rareness – and he believes his Celica should rank highly on that scale.

While he loves the car's rounded lines, sports-car looks and excellent fuel economy, he says it is probably the only Celica in the world of its model and vintage that has been so sparingly run and lovingly maintained.

While his wife of 40 years is not necessarily happy at the attention he lavishes on the Celica, she remains a Toyota loyalist. She drives a Camry.

Toyota Prius "Family" coming to Australia

Toyota Prius Family coming to Australia

Toyota will display an extended Prius "family" at the Australian International Motor Show in July.

The spacious Prius v – the v stands for versatility – is aimed at widening the appeal of Prius, especially for growing families with active lifestyles.

While its footprint is similar to the current Prius, it is an all-new vehicle with a more spacious interior – especially in the luggage compartment.

Prius v will feature at the motor show alongside a new hybrid city car, the Prius c Concept, and the third-generation Prius.

Prius v styling is sleek, rounded and bold, with an extended roofline that allows the vehicle to retain the triangular silhouette symbolic of Prius.

Inside, it delivers extra flexibility with its sliding second-row seats, the backs of which can recline up to 45 degrees. A fold-flat front passenger seat allows extremely long cargo to be carried.

Prius v also delivers the great fuel economy, low emissions and proven technology of its Prius heritage.

Decisions about bringing these members of the Prius family to Australian showrooms are expected to be announced later this year.

Toyota Aurion has lowest Operating Costs: NRMA

Toyota’s locally built Aurion costs less to run than any other large family car sold in Australia, according to a NRMA survey.

Toyota’s locally built Aurion costs less to run than any other large family car sold in Australia, according to a NRMA survey.

The survey released today says the Toyota Aurion Touring has the lowest running costs in its class.

Its operating costs are just 79.68 cents per kilometre – the only large car under 80 cents per kilometre.

The NRMA said it is a repeat victory for Aurion as the most economical car in its class.

The survey covers 1,200 new vehicles with calculations based on a private owner driving 15,000km a year over five years.

The formula takes into account factors including the negotiated vehicle price, depreciation, registration, comprehensive insurance, NRMA membership, maintenance, repairs and fuel.

Aurion, powered by a 200kW 3.5-litre V6 engine, has won many awards for its overall value, safety, build quality, performance, fuel economy and sound resale value.

Australia’s motoring clubs, including the NRMA, have named the Aurion AT-X as Australia’s best large car on three occasions.

Toyota also offers the best value of any carmaker through a combination of high desirability and low price.

The report says Toyota is a "textbook example of brand resilience" and its performance demonstrates the importance of strong brands.

Only six carmakers were ranked in the top 100. Lexus was the 10th-ranked carmaker with a brand value of more than $3.6 billion.

Toyota increased sales by eight per cent to 8.4 million vehicles worldwide in 2010 – retaining its position as the top-selling car brand.

The study says people shopping for cars spent more time researching on-line and relying on third-party comments as car marketing adjusted to the digital age.

Concern about the environment grew in importance with Toyota's Prius continuing its market leadership amid growth in sales of hybrid and electric cars.

Five-star safety rating for Camry, Hybrid Camry

Five-star safety rating for Camry, Hybrid Camry

Toyota Australia’s Camry and Hybrid Camry have been awarded the maximum five-star crash rating by ANCAP.

As one measure of safety, ANCAP – the Australasian New Car Assessment Program – plays an important role in providing information to potential customers.

The five-star rating confirms that Camry and Hybrid Camry, both produced here in Australia, are strong cars that provide excellent protection for occupants.

The result is not a surprise because the company’s own extensive tests ensure all Toyota vehicles meet or exceed safety standards in every country in which they are sold.

The Camry range also offers advanced safety features that are not activated during ANCAP crash-testing.

Every Camry is fitted with vehicle stability control, traction control and anti-skid brakes – features which have been shown to help save lives.

Camry also has six airbags, including curtain-shield airbags that help protect front and rear-seat occupants in a side-on crash.

The five-star rating for the Camry range applies from May production.

Toyota announces a step forward for Hydrogen cars

Toyota announces a step forward for Hydrogen cars

Toyota has opened the first hydrogen fuelling station in the US with hydrogen supplied directly from a pipeline rather than tanks.

The station will provide hydrogen for Toyota,s fuel-cell hybrid vehicle demonstration program as well as the fuel-cell vehicle fleets of other manufacturers.

Located on Toyota land leased to Shell for a nominal fee, the station is designed to show how effortless pipeline supply of hydrogen can be to a vehicle fuelling station and other hydrogen fuel-cell applications.

Toyota plans to bring a fuel-cell vehicle to market in 2015, or sooner – a move that requires the development of a hydrogen re-fuelling infrastructure.

The company’s fuel-cell hybrid vehicle fleet has already logged several million kilometres since hitting the road in 2002.

The latest generation vehicle, Fuel-Cell Hybrid Vehicle – Advanced (FCHV-adv), has achieved an estimated range of 690km on a single fill of hydrogen.

Toyota’s FCHV-adv nationwide demonstration program is placing more than 100 vehicles with partners by 2013.

As the hydrogen pipeline is next to the company’s sales and marketing HQ in California, Toyota will use emission-free fuel cell technology to offset peak electricity demand and provide some of its hot water and space heating needs.

Toyota Australia to return to normal production in June

Vehicle production at Toyota Australia's Altona manufacturing plant will return to normal levels during the week commencing 6 June 2011.

Production at the Altona plant has been reduced to 50 per cent of pre-earthquake levels since 9 May to manage available parts supply following the Japan earthquake and tsunami.

Toyota Australia President and CEO Max Yasuda said the company had confirmed it had sufficient parts to support a return to full vehicle production.

"Toyota Australia and our suppliers have worked closely with Toyota Motor Corporation to secure the parts needed to resume normal vehicle production levels in early June," Mr Yasuda said.

"This has involved studying and confirming the supply of critical parts from the earthquake affected areas and identifying interim alternate suppliers."

The Altona manufacturing plant will increase production to approximately 9,000 vehicles per month from June.

Mr Yasuda praised the efforts of the Toyota Australia family in helping the company to resume full production earlier than anticipated.

"The past two months have been challenging for Toyota Australia employees, dealers and suppliers, but their flexibility and support has been critical in helping the company get back on its feet quickly," Mr Yasuda said.

Toyota to display Sports-car passion in Australia

Toyota to display Sports-car passion in Australia

Toyota's FT-86 II concept sports car is set to reignite the joy of driving when it stars at the Australian International Motor Show in July.

It is more significant than the average concept car as it provides the clearest indication yet of the final design for a new driver-oriented rear-wheel drive sports car from Toyota.

The production version – due to arrive in Australia in the second half of 2012 or the first half of 2013 – is set to build more excitement for the Toyota brand.

In the meantime, the FT-86 II concept pays homage to Toyota's illustrious sports-car history that includes cars such as the Supra, MR2 and 2000GT.

Its name is derived from another legendary Toyota, the AE86 Corolla, also known as Hatchi-Roku, which means 8-6 in Japanese.

It promises to deliver the style, performance and handling demanded by people who regard driving as a passion rather than a necessity.

Under its remarkably sleek and low bonnet line is a front-mounted horizontally opposed (Boxer) engine.

Allied to the concept car’s compact dimensions, light weight, low centre of gravity and F1™-inspired aerodynamics, it delivers a power-to-weight ratio that is ideal for passionate drivers.

The FT-86 II concept is the result of an August 2009 announcement that Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries would launch a jointly developed compact rear-wheel drive sports car.

Toyota Extends Leadership

Toyota Outsells nearest rival by 50 per cent

Sales of Toyota vehicles in April were 50 per cent ahead of any other brand, according to official figures released today.

Toyota dealers sold 13,680 vehicles for the month – the only carmaker to exceed 10,000 units.

This gave it a lead of 4,570 or 50.1 per cent over its nearest rival.

The strongest demand for Toyota vehicles came from HiLux, Corolla, Camry and Yaris buyers.

In fact, Camry, Prado, LandCruiser 200 Series, HiLux 4x4, HiLux 4x2, HiAce van and HiAce bus were the best-selling vehicles in their respective segments.

Hybrid Camry was the top-selling hybrid vehicle.

So far this year Australian motorists have bought more than 61,500 Toyota vehicles, giving it a lead of more than 22,900 over the second-placed company.

Toyota has now been the top-selling brand for each of the past 73 months.

While the overall new-vehicle market is down on the same period last year, Toyota says it remains healthy in historical terms.

Japan Earthquake causes short term adjustment for Altona Plant

Toyota Australia will adjust vehicle production at its Altona manufacturing plant to manage available parts supply following last month’s Japan earthquake and tsunami.

The manufacturing plant will operate on a reduced schedule of around 50 per cent in the month of May with a similar outlook for the month of June. Approximately 9,600 Camry, Hybrid Camry and V6 Aurion vehicles will be produced during May and June for domestic and export markets.

Global demand lowers Prius price

Global sales of more than two million cars have made Toyota’s Prius more affordable (i-Tech with 17

Toyota Australia has reduced the price of its Prius petrol-electric range as hybrid technology begins to enter the mainstream.

The decision to lower prices on Prius and Prius i-Tech by thousands of dollars comes as global Prius sales have surged past two million.

Toyota has progressively reduced the cost of the technology in its flagship hybrid – a move helped by growing market acceptance.

The company's approach is to set prices that consumers will find attractive and to establish production cost limits to deliver those prices.

Prius is the world's most popular hybrid car with sales last year exceeding half a million for the first time.

Toyota has positioned hybrid as a core technology and believes the introduction of new hybrid models will revitalise the market and help to make eco-cars in general more popular.

In Japan, Prius has been the top-selling car for 21 of the past 22 months.

More than 16,000 have been sold in Australia.

Toyota has recently unveiled three cars that are being considered for Australia – a seven-seat Prius+, five-seat Prius v wagon and the Prius c Concept city car.
